In 1999, the National Institute for Innovative Leadership was asked to take the leadership role in the development of a partnership with United Way of Miami-Dade County and the South Florida Annenberg Challenge in the creation of the 3 year project “ South Florida Annenberg Challenge United Way of Miami-Dade /Success by 6 Initiative”. With the strong collaboration and partnership of the National Institute for Innovative Leadership, Miami-Dade Public Schools, Center for Research on Sport in Society, University of Miami , YMCA of Greater Miami and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Miami emerged a design focused on positive child outcomes by connecting programs to schools The National Institute focused on school readiness and connecting over 100 early childhood community programs to 11 elementary schools in order to begin the initial steps for creating smooth transitions as children entered kindergarten. A second focus was to align curriculum and assessment practices with emphasis on language and literacy with over 50 early childhood programs and 210 primary grade classrooms that would yield positive child outcomes and incorporated practices that are respectful of a child’s language and culture.
